Earlier this month IT Enterprise Business Solutions held their first ever Excel masterclass out in Richmond. Sharing their experiences of data purging and forensic accounting, they entitled the session “beyond just a giant calculator” and was designed for business owners to make the best use out of the program, which sits on everyone’s desktop. On a brisk, but sunny morning several game participants lugged in their laptops, grabbed a croissant and a cup of coffee and started piling their way through different formulas. In attendance we had a financial director of a multinational company, a manager from local law firm and a business owner looking at using excel to develop a pricing module for his trade firm amongst others.
The exercise presented before them lead them through a real life business situation, linking sales of products, back to which sales person and from which make and model. On top of that, date formulas had to be used to isolate transactions, and filter the results. Of course there were pitfalls and barriers laid out to trap the unwary programmer, but eventually information was gleaned from different sources and presented in a graphical format.
