Alternatives to Exchequer software:

Exchequer Software on life support.

Exchequer
Exchequer

Yet another stalwart of the ERP software space has recently hit the skids this year. This comes after Sage has cut both their 100 and 200 options, SAP has quietly dumped its flagship “Bydesign” and BCE  has announced that it is no longer providing upgrades for its cloud based “One Advanced”. It seems that software vendors have rushed to the cloud without thinking about the full implications and cost of doing so.  It has left dinosaurs such as exchequer well behind the eight ball as the online revolution continues unabated.
Exchequer was very popular with product-based businesses as it could handle warehousing, bill of materials, drill down through history, with the ability to customise reports on complex management accounts in real time. It wasn’t so hot on project management, but it was a good solid work horse for most users who needed to track margins and expenses across their entire enterprise. Now it is officially on “extended support” which means maintenance, security and regulatory updates will be maintained, but that’s about it. Eventually even that will be turned off although the program will still keep functioning there will be no support if anything does go wrong so businesses will need to look for a replacement, which is a daunting task.

This is what Exchequer clients are saying about our advice. We have given anonymity to company names to protect them from potential litigations from One Advanced. They are genuine and in their own words.

Client 1:

“As with other businesses we were taken aback to receive the annual statement from One Advanced complete with a significant fee increase. Considering Exchequer is only going to have minimal upgrades we thought it was a bit rich for them to double the price. They even engaged the services of a debt collection agency for an invoice that wasn’t even due. In talking to ITEBS we were able to access legal advice that helped us raise a robust defence against these charges and thus far we have not had any response. If you are facing increased fees from One Advanced then I would suggest contacting ITEBS for expert advice on both your legal and technical options.”

Client 2:

“We contacted ITEBS having come to a point that we realised we needed to update our software as we had been using Exchequer for over 25 years. We were so surprised that they offered to visit us on site to review our operations and understand each aspect of our business. We now have a test environment with full manufacturing and online trade portal that wasn’t available within Exchequer and once we have completed all our due diligence, we will looking to engage them to implement the new solution. Their customer service is first class.”

So what are the alternatives

Obvious alternatives would be SAP Business One which has a similar ethos with advanced accounting requirements, product traceability and warehousing.  Additional modules such as manufacturing, can be bolted on with the help of specialist implementation teams. It is an on premise solution but can be hosted online. SAP is an established player in the marketplace, but it comes with their price tag.

If you don’t need the full functionality of that level of software, then there are few other more cost-effective solutions. Cin7 Core is modular cloud-based offering which has warehousing, advanced manufacturing, bills of materials and links to the popular accounting programs such as Xero or QuickBooks. This handles most businesses stock needs and other integrations are available for CRM or ecommerce platforms.

Oddo is another on Prem or Cloud solution which is an open-source program based on Github, with its own community of developers that continually add on extra modules. It has its own accounting section, or you can link to a 3rd party software such as QuickBooks or Xero.
